Creating a 3D Infinite Zoom Effect in After Effects
In today’s tutorial, we’re diving into how to create a stunning 3D Infinite Zoom Effect in After Effects. The effect creates an illusion where the camera zooms endlessly into an image, revealing a new layer or scene as it progresses. Let’s walk through the process!
Step 1: Generate Your Images
Before we start, you’ll need some images. For this tutorial, I used Ideogram and Leonardo’s AI tools to generate the visuals. You can find their promotion and all the download links in the description. You’ll get access to all the exercise files used in this tutorial, which you can use in your own projects.
Step 2: Import and Scale Your Images
After downloading your images, import them into After Effects. You’ll need to scale down the images to fit them into your composition. Arrange the layers in such a way that the foreground is placed in front of the background to maintain the depth effect.

Step 3: Set Up the Camera and 3D Layers
Next, create a 3D camera by going to Layer > New > Camera. Set the preset to 35mm. After that, right-click on the camera layer and choose Create Orbit Null to control the camera’s movement better. Switch to Two Views mode for a clearer view of your scene’s layers.
Step 4: Arrange Layers in 3D Space
Position the layers (background, hands, main photograph) in 3D space. Place the background at the back and your primary image in the foreground. The key is to create the illusion of depth, which will allow the zoom effect to work seamlessly.
Step 5: Animate the Zoom Effect
Now the fun begins! Set keyframes for the camera’s position to animate the zoom effect. Start by setting the initial keyframe for the camera’s position at 1 second. Move the playhead to 2 seconds and adjust the zoom by changing the camera’s X, Y, and Z values. This will give the illusion of the camera zooming into the scene.
Step 6: Add More Layers and Animate Transitions
Continue adding layers (images) in between to enhance the zoom. For example, at 4 seconds, animate the hands layer moving closer to the camera. At 6 seconds, introduce another image that fits the zoom path. You’ll keep adding layers like this, animating them in sequence.

Step 7: Fine-Tuning and Final Adjustments
Once you’ve placed all your images and animated the camera, fine-tune the keyframes. Adjust the timing, scale, and positioning of your images to ensure everything flows smoothly. Use Easy Ease (F9) for smoother transitions.
Step 8: Final Check
After all the adjustments, preview your animation. You should now have a smooth, seamless 3D infinite zoom effect with layers transitioning one after another, creating a stunning visual experience.
Step 9: Export and Enjoy!
Once you’re satisfied with your animation, export the final composition. You’re ready to impress your audience with your new 3D infinite zoom effect!
